DR. GAVIN SPENNEWYN

When Dr. Spennewyn was a child, he watched as his father, an exercise physiologist, treated a woman with chronic unrelenting pain she had suffered with for the last 10 years. When the woman walked into her first appointment, she had been unpleasant and unkind. When her appointment was done, she left pain-free and as the kindest and sweetest woman Gavin had ever met. Pain robs us of life. In that moment, Gavin found his future and devoted his professional life to alleviating suffering as best he could.

Education

Dr. Spennewyn grew up being mentored by his father in soft tissue techniques and corrective exercise. He developed a love and passion for science and healthcare. This led him to attend the University of Northwestern Saint Paul and earn his Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 2016. In 2019, he graduated from Northwestern Health Sciences in Bloomington as a Doctor of Chiropractic and was hired by the Institute for Orthopedics & Chiropractic (IOC).

At IOC, Dr. Spennewyn underwent an informal residency and fellowship program under Dr. Richard Hills PT, DC, FAAOMPT. Here, he continued his education with a deep understanding in joint biomechanics, Gonstead Chiropractic Manipulation, as well as specialized forms of manual therapy techniques including Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) patterns and functional rehabilitation techniques. By the end of his training, Dr. Spennewyn was well trained in treating every joint in the human body through adjustments, soft tissue techniques, and functional pattern stretching.

He is an evidence-based and science-first Chiropractor who sees his role in healthcare as the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and the restoration of joint mobility using non-surgical techniques.

Personal Life

Dr. Spennewyn was born and raised in Minnesota. While he loves Minnesota, he moved down to Iowa with his girlfriend, Lily, who was accepted into Medical Residency for Pediatrics at Blank Children’s Hospital.

In his free time, Dr. Spennewyn enjoys spending time with friends and family, playing games of all sorts, finding new experiences around town, and exploring new cuisines. When he has a bit more free time, he enjoys visiting nature parks around the US and traveling to Europe to visit his extended family.
